What GPU does he have?  What driver gets used?  (Check
/var/log/Xorg.0.log.)

We know that at least several users get black screen with KMS exactly
due to lack of firmware which newer kernel versions made necessary for
KMS.  Without KMS (with nomodeset) the radeon X driver isn't used.
